
Dolores M. Szymanski was appointed Interim Superintendent of the Shamong Township Public School District in August of 2011. Previously, Dr. Szymanski served as Superintendent of the Burlington County Institute of Technology.
Dr. Szymanski served as an administrator at BCIT from 1983 to 2011. She brings 37 years of experience in public education in the State of New Jersey to this interim position as well as a statewide reputation as a leader of extraordinary vision and energy.
A 1974 cum laude graduate of Temple University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education/Social Studies, Dr. Szymanski holds a Master of Education degree in Psychology of Reading also from Temple University. She earned her doctorate in education at Wilmington University
After spending nine years as a social studies teacher and reading specialist in both the Camden City and Camden County Vocational Technical school districts, Dr. Szymanski was recruited to accept a position in administration as an assistant principal at BCIT. She was appointed Assistant Superintendent on January 1, 2003.
As Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Szymanski was responsible for curriculum and instruction, professional development, admissions and recruitment, federal and state initiatives, publications, new programs, and the certification and recruitment of staff. During her tenure in the position, the District revised and upgraded academic courses and career major programs. Under her leadership, honors courses in academic areas were added.
Dr. Szymanski has served in a leadership capacity for numerous local, state and federal education associations including president of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association. She was the 1991 recipient of the NJPSA Golden Lamp Award for Educational Excellence in Education; the 1994 NASSP/McDonald’s Corporation’s Assistant Principal of the Year; the 2000 Burlington County Outstanding Woman of the Year in the Field of Education, and the 1996 Temple University Alumna of the Year Award in the Field of Education.
Dr. Szymanski currently serves as a board member of the United Way of Burlington County and chairs the Education Impact Committee. Additionally, she serves as treasurer of the Temple University Alumni Association and South Jersey chair of the Wilmington University Alumni Association.
Dr. Szymanski retired as superintendent of BCIT at the conclusion of the 2010-2011 academic year. She is currently serving as a field advisor to a cohort of doctoral students at Wilmington University.
